Self-hosted MCP or a managed service: how to choose
Written by the AccountHub team.

A self-built MCP server lets you provide tools tailored to your task. You also take responsibility for authentication, permissions, runtime and updates.
A managed integration works within its published capabilities and conditions. Choose based on the action you need and the operation you can maintain. AccountHub is one option when its public features fit.
First compare the alternatives
A small local server may be enough for a limited local task. Remote access also requires checking client support, transport, authorization and exposure. Using MCP alone does not complete secure authentication or permission control.
For services, compare apps, actions, free conditions and disconnection. For self-hosting, consider secret storage, dependency updates, monitoring and recovery. Compare operating time as well as initial cost. For a remote server, check HTTPS, its documented authorization process and compatibility with your AI. Managed services still have separate service permissions and AI-client conditions.
Try a small check
Write down one action first. Separate internal data that needs custom tooling from public-service tasks existing integrations cover. If Gmail search fits AccountHub's conditions, compare using a read-only check.
Use AccountHub to search the Gmail account I specify for 'connection test' from the past seven days. Show source, subject and original link. Do not send or modify anything. Report connection failures separately from the retrieved scope.
Check the result
Compare the conditions needed to finish the same action. Record setup time, permissions, source clarity and recovery. If you have not run a self-built alternative, label the comparison as a design assessment.
Do not paste personal tokens or OAuth credentials into chat; use the intended storage method. A free service can still require an AI subscription. Consider both customization and responsibility.
What to try next
Verify the needed functionality with one action. You can use AccountHub where it fits and assess whether a custom server is needed for the remaining gaps.
