Searching Slack DMs with AI: scope and connection requirements
Written by the AccountHub team.

Whether AI can search Slack DMs depends on the connected user's access and search permission. Connecting AI does not grant access to other people's DMs or the entire workspace.
With AccountHub, specify the workspace and conversation too. Start with one message in a DM you participate in and recognize.
First compare the alternatives
Slack's native search can narrow by people and dates and may be enough. If your AI has an official connection, check whether it covers the same accessible scope.
AccountHub is an option for finding messages from your usual AI conversation. Slack search requires search permission, and an older connection may need reconnection. Check administrative settings and conversation membership as well.
Try a small check
Check connected accounts and choose one workspace. Resolve an ambiguous person or conversation before searching. Replace the sample topic and dates with a familiar, non-sensitive message.
Using AccountHub, search the specified DM I participate in within the Slack workspace I choose for 'review request' from October 1 through October 12, 2026. If the person or conversation is ambiguous, ask first. Show source, time, summary and an original link where available. Do not treat inaccessible scope as zero matches. Do not post or change permissions.
Check the result
Verify the person and workspace against the original. If search fails, separate conversation targeting, permission and connection status.
DM search is different from inviting a bot to a channel for posting. Read access does not establish send capability. No result also does not prove absence from the entire conversation history. Search requires search:read for the connected user. Direct conversation-history reading has additional history-permission conditions, so check search and history retrieval separately.
What to try next
If the familiar DM is found correctly, try another period with the same request. First check whether one conversation retains a clear source.
